Message: This was the nicest hour spent, reading all the remarks. Thanx! Was a '77 Soldoedie. Did basics in George, but served in Paymasters office in Presas, PTA [near PTA station.] Worked with PF pay, [76 77 nr's.] It was great and I loved every minute. Even going on orders, after the MPs that traveled with us on the train back from basics, decided that we had toooooo much fun, on the train with a lot of the guys from Oudtshoorn [going to PTA.] After warning us twice, did the "aankla"-thing. We all went on orders the Monday, got off with a warning because the Brig liked us. After all the formalities was done, had the chat: "how was it" So wę MPs! You had no fun and we have a stunning story to tell!

Message: My brother was one of the soldiers that died in ANGOLA in 1986. His name was JJ JANSE VAN RENSBURG from 5SAI, home base was LADYSMITH before the border period. If anyone can remember something about that time, please email me. That was a very difficult time for our family and friends.

Message: C Squadron 1SSB 1972 / 1973 - UMR 1976 Close to Etali - All those of UMR who were there will remember the bus ride from Grootfontein to Windhoek and the flight back to Durbs in 1976. Regiment did not get Battle Colours. I still think that we made the contribution that we were trained to do. Always in my thoughts RSM G. RENAUD.

Message: 1 Sigs Regt Army Gymnasium '85. It was pure hell. Basics, JL's and Officer Training. 5 Signals Regiment in '86. I was stationed at Wonderboom (Poes plaas) and later Oshakati and Rundu to 'spy' on the Cubans and terrorists. I live in Florida, USA now. The calibre of soldier in the old SADF cannot be found in the world anymore. And to think that we were merely a conscripted cross section of white South African society makes this even more amazing to me. I hope that our descendants will one day roam the plains of Africa again under our own rules, as free men. Vasbyt manne. En onthou -- hou ALTYD die blink kant bou! Ek verlang vandag vreeslik na my ou kamrade en mede krygers. ONS VIR JOU SUID AFRIKA!

Message: 79387494PE S/Sgt J. Steele 1979-1993 - An excellent website in memory of our proud history. Two weeks ago I was at a braai with Col Breytenbach ex-OC of 32Bn and Al J. Venter, who used to write about the South African Army on the border for Soldier of Fortune magazine. They were each launching their latest books. If anyone reading this is genuinely interested in honest accounts of our military history, then I'd definitely try and get my hands on them. Al's book is entitled, "How South Africa Built Six Atom Bombs". The Col's book is entitled, "Eagle Strike". This provides an accurate account of the controversial airborne assault on Cassinga in 1978. Best wishes to all the "ou manne" of the SADF!
